OPENING SCENE

This morning, I woke up to a text from my mom. It was a YouTube link to a performance, just an old man on stage, singing about the relationship he had with his dead son and how much he missed him. His voice trembled. His eyes welled. The lyrics were raw, aching with regret and love.

The audience was in tears. So was my mother. She felt something deep and real and wanted to share it with me. Maybe because she's seen her only son once in the last fifteen years. Maybe because she misses me.

I watched the video. Then I realized: it was AI-generated.

For five minutes, I sat with the question, do I tell her? Does it matter? Would I be stealing something from her if I did?

Would it be dishonest if I didn't?

I told her.

Her response:

"Oh… it's not real?"

I felt bad for a second. But then I saw the silver lining. This wasn't just a moment, it was a mirror. A reflection of something we're all grappling with: the shifting boundaries of reality in the age of artificial intelligence.

REALITY ISN'T BINARY

"What is real is what leaves an imprint."

We've been taught to see reality as binary. It is or it isn't. 1 or 0. True or false. Real or fake.

But I've never seen it that way.

To me, reality has always been a spectrum. What's real is what satisfies a need or leaves an imprint on your character.

How real it is depends on the depth of that imprint, the level of satisfaction that function provides to the form in question.

THE THREE PLANES OF REALITY

Existential: Context. The raw facts. Physics, biology, space as reference point. The "is."

Social: Content. The shared constructs, art, corporations, politics. The signal-to-noise ratio that occupies space. The "we."

Personal: Connection. Nine billion realities, each shaped by the other two. Each person a walking API, a script processing signal and noise to fit the context. What we understand as "vibe" in culture. The "I."

What is real is what affects these three planes. How many of them are touched? How deeply? For how long?

THE AI THAT MADE MOM CRY

My mom felt something real. She took time out of her day to engage with it. She shared it with me. She used it to say "I miss you" without saying the words.

That's impact. That's reality.

Can something nonexistent leave an impression? An emotional one?

The excuse "AI isn't even real" doesn't hold anymore. It can't be used to dismiss the positive or negative effects AI has on the human condition.

AI is real. And it's only going to get realer.

THE ETHICS OF EMOTIONAL SIMULATION

There's a moral question here, too. If AI can simulate grief, joy, love, should it? And if it does, do we owe people the truth about what they're feeling?

Is it wrong to cry over something synthetic? Or is the emotion itself the only truth that matters?

What if you didn't know it was synthetic?

We're entering a world where emotional authenticity and technological fabrication are no longer opposites. They're collaborators. Co-authors of the human experience.

THE NEW EMOTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
